How to Read Google Analytics (GA4) Without a Marketing Degree

GA4 has more reports than any small business owner needs to check weekly. This is the short list of what actually matters, and what to safely ignore.

Start with Traffic Acquisition, not the home dashboard

This report shows exactly which channel — organic search, paid ads, social, direct — is bringing visitors, which is the first question that matters before anything else. If most traffic comes from one channel, that tells you where to focus and where you're exposed.

Conversions matter more than sessions

A spike in visitors means nothing on its own — check whether it came with a matching spike in form submissions, calls, or purchases (set up as "key events" in GA4). Traffic without conversion tracking configured is a vanity number, not a business metric.

Engagement rate replaced bounce rate — and means something different

GA4's engagement rate counts a visit as "engaged" if it lasts 10+ seconds, has a conversion, or has 2+ page views — the opposite framing of old bounce rate. Don't compare GA4 numbers directly against pre-2023 Universal Analytics benchmarks; they're not the same metric.

Link GA4 to Google Ads if you're running paid campaigns

Without this link, ad spend and on-site behavior live in two disconnected tools, making it impossible to tell which campaigns actually drive conversions versus just clicks. This is a one-time setup in GA4's admin panel that most accounts never complete.
