Retargeting Ads Explained: Why the Same Customer Sees Your Ad Twice

Most visitors don't convert on their first visit to a website — retargeting is the mechanism that brings a meaningful share of them back, and it's usually one of the more efficient parts of an ad budget.
It targets people who already showed intent
Unlike cold prospecting, retargeting only reaches people who've already visited your site, viewed a product, or started a form — that prior intent is why retargeting campaigns typically convert at a noticeably higher rate than cold campaigns.
Frequency needs a cap, or it becomes annoying instead of persuasive
Seeing an ad twice can be a helpful reminder; seeing it fifteen times in a week reads as intrusive and can actively damage brand perception. Setting frequency caps is a small setting with an outsized effect on how the campaign feels to the person seeing it.
Segment by what they actually did, not just that they visited
Someone who abandoned a cart at checkout needs a different message than someone who read one blog post and left — treating all site visitors as one retargeting audience wastes the specificity that makes retargeting effective in the first place.
It works best as part of a full funnel, not a standalone tactic
Retargeting recovers visitors who already showed interest — it can't create interest that wasn't there. It's most effective paired with campaigns that build genuine initial intent, not as a substitute for them.
